2010 Light Fingers Stakes Preview – More Joyous the Favourite

February 11th, 2010

The prestigious Royal Sovereign Stakes Day is playing out at Randwick Racecourse this Saturday, headlined four great group status races including the $150 000 Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).

This year ten of the country’s top three-year-old fillies are starting in the event with many of Sydney’s premier trainers represented in the final field.

Gai Waterhouse has her star filly More Joyous running in the Light Fingers Stakes, the promising sprinter likely to start as the odds-on favourite despite drawing wide with barrier ten.

More Joyous has been on fire recently and has won four of her seven starts. Nash Rawiller, aboard the filly for her previous wins, will again take the mount on Saturday.

Drawn ideally in barrier one is Run For Naara, the John Thompson-trained More Than Ready filly who has displayed consistent form in her last few starts. The 1200m distance however is slightly shorter than she favours, having only ever won at 1600m and 2000m.

John Thompson also has So Anyway engaged in the race, jumping from barrier seven with in-form hoop Blake Shinn aboard.

Peter Snowden, the trainer currently leading the Australian Metro Trainer Premiership with 64 wins, has Trim, a promising Lonhro filly jumping from barrier eight on Saturday.

Other top trainers with runners in the 2010 Light Fingers Stakes are David Payne with Prerequisite (br.4) and Chris Waller with Little Surfer Girl (br.9).

David Payne is aiming at back-to-back Light Fingers Stakes success with Prerequisite following his win with Rock Me Baby last year. Strong, fit and in good form Prerequisite looks well positioned to run a place here.

Also worth keeping an eye on is the Gillian Heinrich-trained Sweepstaking in barrier five, who is coming off a recent string of successes.

The Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes is scheduled as race five at the meetings cracker eight-race card.
