A less-than capacity list of 14 fillies have been nominated for an appearance in Saturday’s Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick, highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.
Arguably the standout two-year-old of the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Team Hawkes have nominated Mossfun for a long-awaited racing return in the 2015 Light Fingers Stakes.
Taking out a minor over 1000m on debut in late 2013, Mossfun stamped her claims as one to watch upon returning in 2014; taking out each of the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) and Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) in succession.
Suffering her first competitive defeat at the hands of Earthquake in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, the Mossman filly responded in the best way possible when charging home to win the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th.
Unable to take her place in any race over spring with a string of unfortunate minor ailments, Mossfun has performed well in several barrier trials in 2015 and appears primed for successful return on Saturday.
Delivering trainer Chris Waller another Group 1 victory over the 2014 spring, Amicus has been nominated for a racing return in the 2015 Light Fingers Stakes.
Placing third in a minor over 1100m on debut in February last year, Amicus broke through for a maiden race win in the Hyland Race Colours Plate (1150m) on March 26th and returned to the paddock following a luckless run for sixth in the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) on April 19th.
Running third in a minor over 1300m upon returning in spring, the daughter of Fastnet Rock place second in the Cove Hotel 3.y.o (1400m) and Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) before charging home to take out the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 11th.
Waller is set to be offered two good chances of success in the 2015 Light Fingers Stakes, having also included Winx in nominations.
Winning her first two starts over winter, Winx more than stamped her claims as one to watch when returning for victory in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) on September 6th; progressing to second in each of the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on October 4th.
Peggy Jean was unable to make much of an impact over her short two start campaign in spring, but is reportedly in career-best form leading into autumn after connections made the decision to return her to the paddock early.
A standout over the 2014 autumn; Peggy Jean placed third in a minor over 1200m on February 1st; progressing to a close second in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) before taking out the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Day 1 of The Championships.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2015 Light Fingers Stakes is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
