A standout performer over the 2014 Spring Carnival, jockey Blake Shinn is thrilled to have regained the ride on First Seal for Saturday’s 2015 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) and rates the three-year-old amongst the best he has ridden.
Finishing outside the top three just once through her six start career so far, First Seal has not been seen at the races since running on for a credible second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 11th.
Having partnered the daughter of Fastnet Rock to success in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) only a week prior to her Spring Champion Stakes second, Shinn conceded she may return in slightly less-than-perfect condition in the 2015 Light Fingers Stakes, but is confident her class will count for a lot.
“She’s one of the best horses I’ve ever ridden,” Shinn told AAP.
“She’s got a great turn of foot, she’s strong, she’s got a great presence about her.
“She’s short of her best (for the Light Fingers Stakes) and a bit underdone but I’m hoping class will get her over the line.”
Running fourth in a minor over 1250m on debut in May, First Seal was immediately returned to the paddock, rather than heading to Brisbane for the Winter Racing Carnival, as initially outlined.
Returning on August 13th for an impressive win in the Daily Press Group Plate (1100m) at Randwick, First Seal ran second to standout performer Sweynesse in the TAB Early Quaddie 3.y.o (1400m) on August 30th before making a successful transition to black type racing when taking out the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m), in what was her only other start prior to her Flight Stakes triumph.
